Favourite Flicks: In Time

I wasn't too keen on watching this film. I tend to add anything I haven't seen before to my Lovefilm list which ends up in me watching a lot of rubbish. And I wasn't keen on watching a film starring Justin Timberlake because well, I couldn't imagine him being a convincing actor.

But lo and behold, this film was a very pleasant surprise! :)

The concept is rather interesting... Imagine if money no longer existed. It has been replaced with the currency of time. So, instead of paying £3 for a coffee (I live in London!) you'd pay 3 minutes. A car? Well, that would set you back 5 years! You also get paid in time, you pay your rent in time and if you run out of time, well, you just drop down dead. You could literally watch your life ticking away, as in this picture below. Oh, and people can beat you up and steal your time. Watch your back, folks!

Source
It doesn't stop there... You stop ageing when you're 25 and you have the potential to live on forever. This leads to a lot of confusion as to whether the man you're meeting is somebody's father, grandfather or even great-grandfather. Awkward. It's a little weird seeing Olivia Wilde playing Justin's mother. Even weirder when you find out it's her 50th! It's a strange ol' world.

The film sees Justin taking on the hypocrisy of his odd society, escaping his ghetto and seeing how the other half lives. This makes him deeply unhappy and he becomes a futuristic Robin Hood, stealing time from the rich and giving it to the poor, literally saving lives. It's a very interesting story which raises all sorts of questions about our own world.

Have you seen this film? What did you think?

Favourite Flicks: Zombieland

Carrying on yesterday's theme of zombies, my favourite 'zom-com' is the downright hilarious Zombieland. If you cross Scott Pilgrim with Shawn of the Dead, you'd probably end up with something resembling Zombieland.

Part post-zombie-apocalypse survival guide, part love story and a whole lot of laughs and gore, this is a little different from your usual zombie flick. Zombies have of course taken over the world and this is a tale of fighting for survival against all the odds. You'd think that this would bring the few survivors closer together, right? Wrong. It's hard to trust anybody in Zombieland. Watch out for a cameo from a Hollywood star playing himself ;) Classic! Expect a rollercoaster ride as anything goes in Zombieland.

Necessary viewing, I insist that if you haven't seen it already then you must. Enjoy!

Books I Love: The Hunger Games Trilogy

Source

Wow.

Oh my goodness.

I just finished this trilogy in about six weeks. I just couldn't put this stuff down!

I'd heard all the hype which had naturally completely put me off but then my friend insisted that I simply HAD to read the books. As I'd never heard my friend raving about a book before, I figured I should finally see what all the fuss was about. And I'm soooo glad I did :)

For those of you that have seen the film, the books are a whole world darker. There's so much twisted violence in these books that there's no way this will ever be accurately portrayed in the cinema - totally not suitable for children.

I would never spoil these for you but trust me, if you haven't already read these books, DO!

Favourite Flicks: Made in Dagenham

I watched Made in Dagenham for the first time yesterday and I loved it! It's about a group of female Ford machinists in the 60s who decided to bravely stand up and say that it wasn't ok that they were being paid a lot less than the men. Rita (played by Sally Hawkins) finds herself leading the cause whilst trying to juggle her other responsibilities as a wife and a mother, and not always receiving the support that she hopes for.

The 60s fashion is to die for and I love the sight of all the women cycling to work together to start their shift. A film which leaves you feeling proud to be a woman ;) (if you are a woman!)

Favourite Flicks: The Birds

I know, I know. This is an old film and I'm waaaaay behind the times. There are many classics I am yet to see but I count myself lucky that there is still so much for me to discover! I was very lucky to be introduced to some amazing classics while studying for my degree and that has made me rather keen to continue discovering these hidden gems :)

I found a boxset of Hitchcock films when we moved house. It turns out that my boyfriend had it stashed away somewhere so that I'd somehow managed to miss it for two years... Maybe that shows how unobservant I am ;) I broke it open the other day and this was the first film I watched...

I will certainly be watching more Hitchcock films, I absolutely loved it and was very sad that it wasn't a longer film. I was surprised by how much it affected me. I wouldn't say it was a terrifying film but it certainly has its moments, unexpected and quite shocking. And of course there is the vintage fashion to enjoy ;) Most definitely worth another watch! Have you seen The Birds?

Favourite Flicks: Crazy Sexy Cancer

I just watched the most incredible documentary! It's a film made by Kris Carr and it follows her soon after she discovers she has a rare form of incurable cancer and her efforts to do everything she can to stabilise her condition. She discovers new age medicine, dietary regimes and meets other strong ladies fighting the big C.  It's a hugely inspiring film, one that teaches you that you can't take your health for granted and you should enjoy life each and every day!

I highly recommend you see this! :)

And if you like what you see, check out the lady's blog here!

Little pieces of information...

Below are 5 completely non-important and totally random Hannahisms. Completely useless pieces of information that make me, well, me!

1) Once I've started reading a book or watching a film, I HAVE to finish it no matter how much I think it sucks. However, when it comes to a TV series, I give it three episodes and then I'll allow myself to scrap it. Oh, and I HAVE to watch a series from the start and in order.

Hmm... guess I'm a gigaholic too... My longest list is my Lovefilm list which currently stands at 926 titles, eek!

3) I used to have a tradition of having a Lord of the Rings extended editions marathon on Easter Sunday which usually involved also eating a ton of pizza and chocolate brownies too, heaven! It all started on a particularly lonely Easter Sunday while I was living in Barcelona. My flatmates had gone away for the weekend and I was missing my family and friends back in England and it sucked! My tradition was broken this year when my man whisked me away to Brighton for a romantic weekend away :)

4) I find that I get very nostalgic on Bonfire Night. I always think about where I was and who I was with in the years before. I also wonder what my life will bring me for Bonfire Night the next year...

5) I got my first television job straight out of university off the back of entering a competition! It was for the chance to be a 'slave' for a channel at a music festival for a weekend. I was offered a permanent position and a move to London the next day and the rest is history!

What makes you 'you'? I'd love to know!
